Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)


CNLC proudly offers the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) and have helped many new arrivals to Australia gain conversational skills and increase their job prospects. AMEP provides migrants and refugees with unlimited access to free English language classes. Students are welcome to attend AMEP classes until they reach a level of vocational English they’re comfortable with.

What do AMEP classes involve?

In Adult Migrant English Program AMEP classes you learn English language skills directly related to Australian life. AMEP classes are taught by teachers trained to teach English to speakers of other languages. You will meet other new arrivals with similar backgrounds and goals to yourself, and you may even make new friends.

Free childcare is available for anyone considering AMEP classes who has children under school age. We will assist you in finding free childcare if you require it.

Am I eligible for AMEP classes?

You may be eligible to enrol in AMEP classes if you are a migrant or refugee with a permanent visa. You may also be eligible to join the program if you are:

  • a migrant with an eligible temporary visa
  • an Australian citizen who previously held a permanent visa

You can also keep studying or return to AMEP classes if:

  • you have enrolled in AMEP before and have been living in Australia for many years
  • you have completed 510 hours (the previous limit), until you reach vocational English

What impact do AMEP classes have on my Workforce Australia obligations?

Workforce Australia is the government employment program that replaced Jobactive in 2022. Reporting obligations and requirements have changed under Workforce Australia, offering a broader range of services than just placing people in jobs. Instead of applying for 20 jobs a month, Workforce Australia uses a Points Based Activation System where you receive points for performing certain actions that contribute towards your employability.

Your mutual obligation requirements have been expanded to include more than just applying for jobs. Education and employability training will now contribute towards your mutual obligation requirements. Education such as AMEP classes can make up a large portion of mutual obligation points, and it is possible to attend enough classes in a month to meet all your reporting requirements. AMEP participants who study for a minimum of 15 hours a week no longer have to apply for jobs to meet their mutual obligations.
